Summary: Kelvin Cochan spoke at my church as a guest speaker a couple of weeks ago about a life of courage. It was part of a series by my church of "life's necessary ingredients". Cochran was the former Atlanta, Georgia Fire Chief, and he had served in the fire service for 34 years. At one time Cochan held the highest position in the fire service as the U.S. Fire Administrator under President Obama. In 2014 Cochan, a devout Christian, wrote a book about the Christian lifestyle for the men's ministry he is involved in at his church. He even gave the book to some of his co-workers. One of his co-workers was a gay-activist that got very offended by Cochan 's words on homosexuality being "impure" in the book. The co-worker took the issue to the city where Cochan got sued and later fired. From being the top-dog in the fire service, Cochan was now out of a job. His church helped his family so much that they gave him a job at the church where he is currently employed and as happy as could be.
Message: His message was about how this was God's plan the whole time. God gives every Christian a "God Suffering", which in the end brings peace and is always for the glory of God. Cochran does not regret the decision at all, even after losing his child-hood dream job. "People in society today are more focus on earthly consequences than on the Kingdom consequences," says Cochan. Hundreds of persecuted Christians have died defending the Kingdom of God. Recently, 21 Egyptian Christians gave their lives to God to defend God against the radical terrorist group ISIS. 10 months ago 147 Kenyan College Christians got massacre by the Taliban for also defending their faith. To be a disciple of God Cochan knew he had to give his all just like the original 12 disciples. He knew there was worldly consequences for speaking the Biblical Truth. He just did not know it would lead to this.
What we can Learn- Being faithful as Christina means giving your all to God and accepting that there is a great chance you will have worldly consequences and persecutions in your life. This can include giving up your life, career, or even loved-ones for the Kingdom of God. God does all his sufferings in life to test your faith. If you stay faithful the struggle will make you stronger , more appreciative, and more humble s a Christian.
